When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; Psalm 8:3

After the sun, the moon is the most prominent object we see in the sky above.  The moon is 2, 145 miles in diameter at its equator.  The earth is about eighty times as massive as the moon.  The distance from the earth to the moon ranges from around 227, 000 miles to about 253, 000 miles.

The moon revolves around the earth, with the time measured from new moon to new moon at slightly more than twenty-nine and a half days.  Because the moon also rotates on its axis about once a month it keeps the same face towards the earth. 

The creation of the moon is recounted in Genesis.

And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years: And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so. And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also. And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth, and to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good. And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.  Genesis 1:14-19

Many do not believe this account of the creation of the moon.  Modern science discounts the above scripture, as nothing more than a fable, by saying "there is no GOD".  Many today do not like to retain any knowledge of GOD in their hearts as evidenced by lifestyles around us.

And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.  Romans 1:28-32

The account in Genesis does not tell us how GOD made the sun, moon and stars, but it does tell us why He made them.  The purpose of their existence is, believe it or not, centered on the earth.  Their purposes include the following:

To divide day from night,

For signs,

For seasons,

For days,

For years,

To give light upon the earth,

To rule over day and night,

And as seen in Psalms (148:3) the sun and moon were made to praise the Lord.

It is obvious to everyone that the moon gives light upon the earth, and how the light is divided day from night by the sun.  The fact that our calendars use the sun, for day and year, and the moon, for month, reveals their interesting combination and use for days and years.  We use a solar calendar, based on the sun, but the Jews still use a luni-solar calendar, which couples both to the sun and the moon.  All bear witness to the Word of GOD in Genesis!

The moon was created to be eternal.

They shall fear thee as long as the sun and moon endure, throughout all generations.  In his days shall the righteous flourish; and abundance of peace so long as the moon endureth. Psalm 72:5, 7

Jesus, Himself will be established forever as the moon and as a faithful witness in heaven.

His seed shall endure forever, and his throne as the sun before me. It shall be established forever as the moon, and as a faithful witness in heaven.  Psalm 89:36-37

As the moon shines by the light of the sun, and has no light of its own, so we, as followers of Jesus, reflect the light of GOD Almighty, and have no light of our own.

This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.  1 John 1:5, 7

The next time you see the moon rising remember something interesting.

We were born (were risen) in sin and therefore we all start out as basically... bad.  The moon reflects light from the sun and was created to be eternal. In a like manner, after we trust in Jesus, we reflect the light of GOD and will live with him forever.  We are the bad moon rising!  All of us!  All of Humanity!  Praise God for Jesus Christ!  It is because of Him that we can spend eternity in the light.  The next time you see the moon.think about it!
