Jesus
being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and immediately was
led up of the Spirit, which driveth him into the wilderness, to be
tempted of Satan, the devil.
And
when he had fasted, did eat nothing, for 40 days and 40 nights in the
wilderness with the wild beasts, he was afterward hungered. And being
40 days tempted of the devil, the tempter came to him and said, "If
thou be the son of God, command that this, these stones be made bread." But Jesus answered him and said, "It is written, that man
shown not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of
the mouth of God.
Then
the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain and showed unto
him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them in a moment
of time. And the devil said unto him, "All these things and power
will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto
me; and to whomsoever I will I give it, if thou wilt therefore fall
down and worship me, and all shall be thine.
And
then Jesus answered and said unto him, "Get thee hence behind me,
Satan, for it is written, thou shalt worship the Lord thy God,
and him only shalt thou serve.
Then
the devil taketh him, brought him to Jerusalem, up into the holy city,
and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple, and said unto him, "If
thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down from hence, for it is written,
He shall give his angels charge over thee, and concerning thee, to keep
thee, and in their hands, they shall bear thee up, lest at any time
thou shalt dash thy foot against a stone." Jesus answering said
unto him, "It is written again, thou shalt not tempt the
Lord thy God."
And
then, when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from
him, and leaveth him for a season. And behold, the angels came and ministered
unto him.
