2 Timothy-Detailed Outline

A. Hold to the Charge

2 Timothy 1:1-1:7 Introduction
2 Timothy 1:9-1:11 Not ashamed, but a partaker of affliction. “Fear” is cowardice. “Power” is strength to overcome in the believer’s life. “Sound mind” is discipline. God does not intend that defeat should be the norm in Christian living. It takes courage to stand for Christ. Paul speaks of himself as a prisoner of Christ in reality, not of the Roman government. Our Lord “who is the one who has abolished death, and brought life and immortality through the gospel
2 Timothy 1:12-1:18 Not ashamed, but assured. Paul was not ashamed of the gospel and he urges Timothy not to be ashamed of it. We know who we believe and we are persuaded He will do as he promised.

B. Encourage Others to Take Up the Charge

2 Timothy 2:1-2:2 A son: As a believer, he is called “my son”…because he is born from above. As a son, he is to be strong. As a son he is to instruct others so that they in turn may pass the gospel on to others.
2 Timothy 2:3-2:4 A good soldier: “Endure hardness” is to suffer hardness with him. Don’t get entangled with this world, so you can please him who has chosen you to be a soldier.
2 Timothy 2:5 An athlete: Strive as in a competition.
2 Timothy 2:6-2:14 A farmer: Remember Jesus Christ of the seed of David, raised from the dead”. Paul travailed that others might be born into the family. Paul also believed that faith without works is dead. Striving about words” is of no good profit at all.
2 Timothy 2:15-2:19 A workman: Study to show you approved to God, a workman that needed not be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. A “workman” means a teacher. Not to be ashamed means a worker should know the Word. Rightly dividing is to handle rightly.
2 Timothy 2:20-23 A vessel: Different vessels, for different purposes: Be a fit and pure vessel fit for Jesus’ use
2 Timothy 2:24-26 A servant: A servant is to be gentle to everyone, patient and apt to teach. We are to meekly teach others so God will give others repentance so they may acknowledge the truth, be delivered from Satan and be saved.

C. Guard the Charge Always

2 Timothy 3:1-3:9 Conditions in the last days
There are nineteen words or phrases used to describe the last days:
1. “Lovers of their own selves” are lovers of self.
2. “Covetous” is better “lovers of money.”
3. “Boasters” are swaggerers.
4. “Proud” is haughty.
5. “Blasphemers” is better “railers.”
6. “Disobedient.”
7. “Unthankful.”
8. “Unholy” is profane or common.
9. “Without natural affection” means to have abnormal relationships.
10. “Trucebreakers” means irreconcilable.
11. “False accusers.”
12. “Incontinent” means without self-control.
13. “Fierce” is savage.
14. “Despisers of those that are good” is better “haters of good.”
15. “Traitors” are betrayers.
16. “Heady” means reckless.
17. “High-minded” means to be blinded by or drunk with pride.
18. “Lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God” means pleasure lovers rather than God-lovers.
19. These go through the rituals of religion but lack life and reality. “From such turn away” means to avoid them.
The folly of these people is obvious to all. Folly means that their teaching is senseless and immoral.
3:10-3:17 Authority of Scriptures in the last days: We are known (or should be) by our doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, long suffering, love patience, persecutions and afflictions. Evil people will get even eviler. We should continue in what we know regardless. Against the times and evil people scripture and knowledge of scripture is the only recourse. Scripture is profitable for doctrine, reproof, correction, and instruction that we are useful to whatever the Lord might require of us

D. Preach the Charge Always

2 Timothy 4:1-4:5 Instructions for the last days Preach the word, be diligent, reprove, rebuke and exhort with longsuffering and doctrine. There will come a time that sound doctrine will be replaced with fables. Watch all things, endure afflictions, do the work on an evangelist, faithfully perform whatever ministry you might have.
2 Timothy 4:6-4:8 Deathbed testimony of Paul. Paul has fought the good fight and is ready to go to be with the Lord. He is not ashamed and is looking forward to rewards and seeing his Lord.

D. Summation

2 Timothy 4:9-4:22 Last words: This is an exchange of personal greetings and news. Paul remembers people for various things and wants to see Timothy badly before he goes to be with the Lord
