2 Peter -Detailed Outline

A. Gospel Message Should Produce an Enthusiastic Response

2 Peter 1:1-1:14 Addition of Christian graces gives assurance. God gives us all things that pertain to life and godliness. We are called to glory and virtue. God promises us that we will be partakers of the divine nature of God through faith in Jesus. We are to be diligent in our faith. To faith we should add virtue (excellence with energy), knowledge, self-control, patience, godliness, kindness, and love. If we possess these things we will not be barren or fruitless in the knowledge of Jesus Christ. If we lack these things we have forgotten what and how we were purged from our sins. Sterility and lack of enthusiasm may lead to the place where the believer will forget he has been saved. Make your calling and election more sure. It is possible to believe in the security of the believer but lack the assurance of salvation. Security of the believer is objective. Assurance of salvation is subjective. Peter felt called to stir up these saints to grow in grace lest spiritual senility set in.
2 Peter 1:15-1:21 Authority of the Scriptures attested by fulfilled prophecy. In light of his approaching death, Peter calls attention to that which should be remembered. We do not follow fables. Peter saw the glory of Jesus himself at the transfiguration. There is something more reliable and trustworthy than being an eyewitness to the Transfiguration is “a more sure word of prophecy.” Scripture is a light that is focused on the appearing of Jesus Christ. No prophecy of the Scripture is to be interpreted apart from other references to the same subject. Holy men were men set apart for the task of writing Scripture. The Holy Spirit carried these men along like a sailboat is powered by the wind.

B. Warnings Against Evil Doers and False Teachers

2 Peter 2 False prophets brought in heresy to the nation Israel. False teachers are the bearers of heresy and apostasy into the church. One of the marks of identification is that they deny Christ’s work of redemption for them. False followers will go after false teachers. God’s elect cannot be permanently deceived. Covetousness is another mark of a false teacher. Even some angels rebelled against God. Rebellion against God will appear in the last days. The ungodly of Noah’s day left God out of their lives, even in eating and drinking and in marriage. Gross immorality characterized Sodom and Gomorrah. Lot was a righteous man. This is enlightening. The record in Genesis does not make it clear that Lot was a righteous man. God can and will do two things, of which Lot’s experience is an illustration:
(1) “Deliver the godly out of temptations”
(2) Keep the unjust for judgment
These false teachers are total apostates, hopeless. Angels would not presume to do the things that these apostates do. These apostates are like animals. A striking, frightful, and bold description of apostates is given. Perverse apostates have head knowledge. They know he truth but have not received a love of the truth.

C. Jesus is Coming Back

2 Peter 3:1-3:4 Attitude toward return of the Lord is a test of apostates: Both prophets and apostles have warned that scoffers will come in mockery. They ridicule the coming of Christ on the false premise that there has been no great cataclysm since the creation.

2 Peter 3:5-3:13 Agenda of God for the World

2 Peter 3:5-3:6 God’s Agenda for the past world: The Word of God created the world to begin with. It was destroyed by water in the days of Noah.
2 Peter 3:7-3:12 God’s agenda for the present world. The present world will be destroyed by fire. The seeming delay does not mean that the Lord is not coming or that He has had to change or postpone His coming. The Lord is coming as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise. The elements shall melt. The entire world and the works in it will be burn up. In view of these inevitable facts of the future, the lives of believers now should become serious and important.
2 Peter 3:13 God’s agenda for the future world. The world that shall be…the new heaven and the new earth, which will never be destroyed and will subsequently be immersed in righteousness, is described.
2 Peter 3:14-3:18 Admonition to believers. Be diligent. Be peaceful. Be blameless. The coming of Christ should make for a stable and steadfast life. Remember Jesus’ suffering gives us salvation.
