2 John-Detailed Outline
A. Introduction
2 John 1:1-1:4 John writes as an elder. The elder has a twofold meaning: (1) seniority (referring to age), a senior citizen. (2) Title (referring to office), minister or teacher. The Elect lady, to whom this letter is addressed, could refer to a prominent lady in the church, or a reference to the local church (bride of Christ). Truth is the theme of this epistle. The truth is the body of doctrine of the apostles. We defend the truth…forever. We live in grace, mercy and peace through truth and love. WE are to walk in truth…obey Jesus’ commandments.
B. Love Defined
2 John 1:5-1:6 Love one another. This is love...follow the commandments. If you love me keep my commandments.
C. Exhortation
2 John 1:7-1:9 Many deny that Jesus came in the flesh. These are deceivers and are of the antichrist. Warning of loosing rewards, not salvation. To reject the doctrine of Jesus is to be not saved. Doctrine is a proof of life.
D. False Charity to be Avoided
2 John 1:10-1:11 If anyone cometh unto you and brings not His teaching (doctrine), receive him not into your house and give him no greeting. Believers are not to support false teachers in any way. One who supports a false teacher is a partner in his error.
D. Summation
John anticipated visiting this person or church to whom he had written. There are greetings from another person or church.
