The Air Force has successfully launched an unarmed Minuteman 3 intercontinental ballistic missile from the California coast to an area in the Pacific Ocean some 4,200 miles away.

Lt. Raymond Geoffroy says the ICBM was launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base at 3:01 a.m. Monday and carried three unarmed re-entry vehicles to their targets near the Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands.

The missile, configured with a National Nuclear Security Administration Test Assembly, was launched under the direction of the 576th Flight Test Squadron.

The Air Force says the launch was an operational test to check the weapon system’s reliability and accuracy, and the data will be used by United States Strategic Command planners and Department of Energy laboratories.

Polish engineer’s refusal to convert costs him his life

Islamabad – Piotr Stanczak did not exhibit the slightest hint of hesitation when the Pakistani Taliban asked him to choose between execution and conversion to Islam. Whether the Polish geologist acted out of pride or religious conviction, he decided to pay through his blood to save his faith, a choice that bewildered his killers and keep them talking about him with respect after his murder.

Stanczak, 42, was kidnapped September 28 on his way to survey for oil exploration in Attock district, of Pakistan’s eastern province of Punjab. The kidnappers also killed his driver and two guards.

Militants released a gruesome seven-minute video in early February showing his beheading. One of the murderers blamed the Pakistani government which failed to accept their demands for the release of detained militants.

Warsaw reacted angrily, slammed Islamabad’s “apathy” in tackling terrorism and offering a 1-million-zloty (300,000-dollar) reward for information leading to the capture of the Taliban militants who beheaded Stanczak.

Netanyahu to Putin: Stop selling missiles to Iran

Relations between Israel and Russia have grown tense over a significant change in Moscow’s attitude regarding the possible sale of S-300 air defense missiles to Iran. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin and asked him to prevent the arms deal from going through.

Ahead of a meeting between U.S. President Barack Obama with his Russian counterpart Dmitry Medvedev next week, Israel has began an international effort to pressure Russia not to complete the sale of the advanced air defense system.

The deal between Russia and Iran for the sale of the air defense system was signed more than a year ago, but external pressure, primarily from the United States and Israel, led the Russian political leadership to delay its implementation.

The Russian response to Israeli inquiries on the matter had been that they do not intend to complete the deal. The same message was reiterated during Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s visit to Israel last month…more…

NKorea slams Hawaii missile deployment

North Korea has condemned the US for stationing missile defense systems around Hawaii, deeming the move warmongering of Washington’s forces.

“Through the US forces’ clamorous movements, it has been brought to light that the US attempts to launch a pre-emptive strike on our republic has become a brutal fact,” North Korea’s main newspaper Rodong Sinmun said in a commentary on Monday.

The paper was referring to a recent deployment of a US ground-based, mobile missile intercept system and radar system in Hawaii, amid a recent war of words between the two countries and fears that the North may fire long-range missiles capable of reaching the islands, some 4,500 miles away.

The war rhetoric between the two sides toughened following a last week summit between President Barack Obama and South Korean President Lee Myung-bak where the US pledged to defend the South with nuclear weapons…more…
