County demands pastor obtain $10,000 permit to host friends

A San Diego pastor and his wife claim they were interrogated by a county official and warned they will face escalating fines if they continue to hold Bible studies in their home.

The couple, whose names are being withheld until a demand letter can be filed on their behalf, told their attorney a county government employee knocked on their door on Good Friday, asking a litany of questions about their Tuesday night Bible studies, which are attended by approximately 15 people.

“Do you have a regular weekly meeting in your home? Do you sing? Do you say ‘amen’?” the official reportedly asked. “Do you say, ‘Praise the Lord’?”

The pastor’s wife answered yes.

She says she was then told, however, that she must stop holding “religious assemblies” until she and her husband obtain a Major Use Permit from the county, a permit that often involves traffic and environmental studies, compliance with parking and sidewalk regulations and costs that top tens of thousands of dollars.

And if they fail to pay for the MUP, the county official reportedly warned, the couple will be charged escalating fines beginning at $100, then $200, $500, $1000, “and then it will get ugly.”…more…

Palestinian official says they need to be watched, prevented from evangelizing, converting Muslims

JERUSALEM – Christians in the Palestinian territories are being “watched,” a spokesman for the Palestinian Authority admitted to WND.

“We have been watching this Christian organization and for the moment there is nothing special in their activity,” said Adnan Dmeire, spokesman for the PA’s security organizations in West Bank.

Dmeire was referring to the Association of the Holy Book, one of the main groups that attends to the needs of Christians in the Palestinian territories. The group has been accused by both the PA and Hamas of carrying out missionary activities. A Bible store the association sponsored in the Gaza Strip – the only Christian bookstore in the territory – was attacked by Islamists several times. The store’s owner, Rami Ayyad, was found shot to death in 2007, his body riddled with bullets.

Israeli security forces demolished a tiny Jewish settlement outpost in the West Bank yesterday days after Binyamin Netanyahu, the Prime Minister, promised President Obama that he would take a tougher stance against the illegal communities built on Palestinian land.

Only hours after police left the prefab shacks and makeshift synagogue in ruins, however, settlers led by a nationalist member of the Israeli parliament moved back in and started rebuilding the settlement of Maoz Esther, an extension of the existing community of Kokhav Hashahar.

At their meeting in Washington earlier this week, Mr Obama called on Mr Netanyahu to dismantle scores of illegal “outposts” — effectively new suburbs of established settlements.

Mr Netanyahu reportedly agreed to the demands, but hours after the demolition he said that Jerusalem would remain the capital of Israel and would “never be divided”.

Coalition chairman MK Ze’ev Elkin (Likud) submitted the amendment to the Basic Law: Jerusalem, Capitol of Israel, Thursday morning. The amendment would require a special majority of 80 MKs to approve any change to the capital’s borders.

“Jerusalem is a city with a special status and historical significance to the Jewish people, and is its eternal capital. Jerusalem as the capital of the Jewish people must be maintained whole as a legacy to future generations,” said Elkin. “To that end, the Knesset must take an action that will prevent any harm to the capital of Israel. Giving up any part of Jerusalem should thus entail a supermajority and not simply a majority vote or a majority of MKs.”…more…

PM Netanyahu can breathe with relief, at least for a few more months: The White House announced Friday that US President Barack Obama would not be presenting an American peace initiative for the Middle East during his upcoming speech in Egypt on June 4.

White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs was asked about the issue following media reports that the plan would be presented soon, following Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to Washington earlier this week.

The American spokesman clarified that the speech itself, which is still being composed in Washington, would be a broader speech about relations with Muslims worldwide, and that the president did not intend to present a Mideast peace plan.
