Rome: Israel ‘Should Return’ Golan to Syria

Israel should return the Golan Heights to Syria as part of the Middle East peace process, visiting Italian President Giorgio Napolitano said today. Speaking after his talks with Syrian President Bashar al Assad, Napolitano also expressed his concern over the expansion of Israeli settlements in Arab
East Jerusalem and the consequences this could have on the peace process. Napolitano also hoped for “the signing of an association accord between Eu and Syria that satisfys both Damascus and the European Union”. An accord – he stressed – “which fully respects the independence and the autonomy of Syria”, and that “reflects the mutual interest of the trade relations”.
Furthermore, Napolitano said that “Italy supports the entry of Syria in the World Trade Organization and, turning his attention to relations between Italy and Syria, the Italian president said they were “excellent” although there were “ample margins to improve them on an economic and cultural level”. “Relations between the two countries, he added, “date back to a long time ago”.
From his part, Assad criticized Israel and his settlement policy. “Israel cannot be chosen as a partner if it continues with the settlements and with the violation of sacred sites”, said the Syrian President also stressing the need for “Israel to stop the siege and the occupation of the territories occupied in 1967 (Golan heights)”. “We want a fair and global peace” which could be reached also “through Turkey’s mediation”…more…

They call themselves “evangelicals”, apparently the term du jour for anyone with crackpot religious views and a fondness for the economic ideas of Karl Marx.
The “evangelical left” (or what’s left of evangelicalism) is now coming into its own as our radical President reaches out for all the help he can get. Brian McLaren, Jim Wallis, Ron Sider and cohorts are completely at peace with taxpayer funding for the butchery of preborn children. They, you see, represent Social Justice, even if it has to be built on the whited bones of innocent babies. Episcopal Church Approves Ordination of Openly Gay Bishop in Los Angeles

The Episcopal Church gave final approval Wednesday to the ordination of an openly gay bishop in Los Angeles, putting a face behind a policy that has divided the church and caused some of its more conservative members to break away.
Mary Glasspool is the first openly gay bishop approved since 2003, when the election of a gay man as bishop of New Hampshire caused such an uproar that the U.S. church, under pressure from other members of the global Anglican Communion, imposed a moratorium on such elevations. The ban was lifted last year.
Glasspool is also one of the first two women to be elected as bishops in the 114-year history of the Los Angeles diocese. The other, Diane M. Jardine Bruce, won final approval March 8.
“I’m overjoyed,” Glasspool said in a phone interview from Baltimore, where she is canon, or senior assistant, to the bishop of Maryland. “It’s time to celebrate. . . . I know there are people who might not be overjoyed by this, and I am committed to reaching out with my own hand and my own heart to people who might not feel the same as I do.”…more…
Presbyterians Call For the End of Israel

American Jewish leaders are condemning a report by the Presbyterian Church USA that blames Israel for the “Palestinian resistance” and denounces companies that conduct business with Israel.
The Jewish Council for Public Affairs (JCPA) say the Presbyterian report reduces the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to a caricature, demonizes Israel, and demands the creation of a Palestinian state.
“It’s a highly-selective use of text, history and circumstances to form an anti-Israel narrative,” says JCPA vice president Ethan Felson.
The 172-page report, written by the Presbyterian Church’s Middle East Study Committee, charges the US government with “complicity in the Israeli occupation” and suggests that the government consider withholding aid to Israel until it agrees to stop building settlements. It singles out the U.S. firm Caterpillar, which manufactures construction equipment, for its “continued profit-making from non-peaceful use of its products.”
The report also endorses the Kairos Palestine document, a manifesto by Christian Palestinians that calls for an end to Israel as a Jewish state and uses words like “evil” and “sin” to describe Israeli actions…more…
