Air Force One landed in Saudi Arabia this morning, the birthplace and epicenter of Islam. President Obama is meeting with Saudi King Abdullah to discuss three top White House priorities:
Building better U.S. relations with a 1.3 billion Muslims.
Strategizing on how the Saudi-crafted “peace plan” can be presented to Israel in a way that will persuade the Netanyahu government to make painful concessions to the Palestinian leadership.
Calming Saudis fears that the U.S. is going to allow the Iranian to build nuclear weapons by doing nothing decisive and effective to stop Tehran.
The Saudis — home of the Sunni brand of Islam — are absolutely terrified at the prospect of Iranian Shia Muslims (whom they consider heretics) going nuclear. They don’t believe the U.S. has the will to stop Tehran in time, or perhaps even the true desire. They fear the White House may have made the calculation that a nuclear Iran is inevitable (like North Korea) and maybe not so bad after all. They are not alone. Egyptian leaders and numerous Gulf state leaders feel the same way. They are nearly panic-stricken that the U.S. will cut them loose and allow a nuclear-armed Persia, their historic enemy, to dominate the epicenter. Interestingly, there is an historic and unprecedented convergence of self-interest forming between Israel, Egypt, the Saudis and the Gulf state Arabs against Iran.
They want Washington on their side against the apocalyptic, genocidal death cult that is currently running Iran. But thus far, President Obama appears to be convinced that he can sit down with the Iranian leadership, have a few carmel lattes with them, and convince them to give up their atomic ambitions. That’s what worries these Arab leaders, as it should.
A battle over the Bible is brewing in the halls of Congress, and political blogs are buzzing about a Southern Baptist congressman’s desire to designate 2010 as “The National Year of the Bible.”
Rep. Paul Broun (R-Ga.), a medical doctor and member of Prince Avenue Baptist Church in Athens, Ga., introduced a resolution May 7 urging President Obama to issue a proclamation “calling upon citizens of all faiths to rediscover and apply the priceless, timeless message of the Holy Scripture.”
Broun’s resolution, which has 15 co-sponsors, says the Bible “has profoundly influenced and shaped the United States and its great democratic form of government, as well as its rich spiritual heritage” and “unified, healed and strengthened” America’s people.
The resolution says “the Bible has had a profound impact in shaping America into a great nation.” It also states that “shared biblical beliefs” are what influenced the colonists to write about individual worth and inalienable rights in the Declaration of Independence and Constitution…more…
U.S. counterterrorism officials have authenticated a video by an al Qaeda recruiter threatening to smuggle a biological weapon into the United States via tunnels under the Mexico border, the latest sign of the terrorist group’s determination to stage another mass-casualty attack on the U.S. homeland.
The video aired earlier this year as a recruitment tool makes clear that al Qaeda is looking to exploit weaknesses in U.S. border security and also is willing to ally itself with white militia groups or other anti-government entities interested in carrying out an attack inside the United States, according to counterterrorism officials interviewed by The Washington Times.
The officials, who spoke only on the condition they not be named because of the sensitive nature of their work, stressed that there is no credible information that al Qaeda has acquired the capabilities to carry out a mass biological attack although its members have clearly sought the expertise.
The video first aired by the Arabic news network Al Jazeera in February and later posted to several Web sites shows Kuwaiti dissident Abdullah al-Nafisi telling a room full of supporters in Bahrain that al Qaeda is casing the U.S. border with Mexico to assess how to send terrorists and weapons into the U.S.
“Four pounds of anthrax — in a suitcase this big — carried by a fighter through tunnels from Mexico into the U.S. are guaranteed to kill 330,000 Americans within a single hour if it is properly spread in population centers there,” the recruiter said. “What a horrifying idea; 9/11 will be small change in comparison. Am I right? There is no need for airplanes, conspiracies, timings and so on. One person, with the courage to carry 4 pounds of anthrax, will go to the White House lawn, and will spread this ‘confetti’ all over them, and then we’ll do these cries of joy. It will turn into a real celebration.”
In the video, obtained and translated by the Middle East Media Research Institute, al-Nafisi also suggests that al Qaeda might want to…more…
Central Command chief Gen. David Petraeus the resolution of the Arab-Israeli conflict would end the justification for Hizbullah’s military presence in Lebanon.
“That is why President Obama is making great efforts in this direction,” Petraeus said.
The U.S. general said weapons from Iran continued to flow through Syria to Hizbullah in Lebanon. He said the U.S. focus was on the shipment of Iranian long-range rockets sent to Hizbullah.
“There is no doubt that Iran is the source,” Petraeus said.
In an interview with the London-based Al Hayat, Petraeus supported the intensified efforts by the administration of U.S. President Barack Obama to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
“I think that many things would be improved with the resolution of this issue,” Petraeus said. “There is no doubt that with a just solution acceptable to all parties and supported by them, there will be no place for various reasons cited by some countries and movements.”
A pro-family group is sounding a warning about an upcoming event this weekend at Walt Disney World.
This weekend, the 19th annual “Gay Days” will be held at Disney World in Orlando. Although officials at the Walt Disney Company say they do not sponsor the event, it has become one of the most popular observances for homosexuals nationwide.
That fact has prompted David Caton of the Florida Family Association to encourage Christians to avoid Disney World this weekend — and also to take action.
“We would encourage people to send an e-mail to customer service at the Disney Company and encourage them to require this event to be held at night, like all other specialty events, when it would not be impacting tens of thousands of children,” he adds…more…
