MK Danny Danon (Likud) visited the Jerusalem neighborhood of Ramat Shlomo Wednesday and toured the site where 1,600 housing units are to be built. The construction plans – long planned but newly announced – raised the ire of US Vice President Joe Biden, who is on a visit to Israel.

“Construction in Jerusalem is squarely at the heart of the Israeli consensus and is unshakeable,” Danon said. “Our right to build in Jerusalem, the eternal capital of the Jewish people, does not depend upon the time, or upon the events of a particular day.”

He stated: “I turn to [United States] President [Barack] Obama and to Vice President [Joe] Biden and say – hands off Jerusalem! Do not interfere in the matter of Jerusalem. The Jewish Nation has a right to this city. [Prime Minister Binyamin] Netanyahu said clearly that on the subject of Jerusalem there will be no compromises and no freezes. Your pressure is useless.”

“There is no proper timing for building in Jerusalem,” he added. “There is no right day or wrong day for building in Jerusalem. Just as construction is approved on a daily basis in Tel Aviv and Haifa, so are things in Jerusalem.”

Christian College Prof Encourages ‘Gay Identity’

A conservative activist is asking a Christian college in Pennsylvania whether it supports the “sexual identity therapy” of one of its professors who is unwilling to discourage some of his clients from remaining in the homosexual lifestyle.

Dr. Warren Throckmorton of Grove City College was once a spokesperson for the ex-”gay” group PFOX (Parents and Friends of Gays and Ex-Gays) and produced a documentary titled I Do Exist, which highlighted the testimonies of former homosexuals who chose to leave that lifestyle.

But now Throckmorton is encouraging some clients to maintain their “gay identity,” even though it is at odds with scripture.  In a paper he co-authored with Regent University’s Mark Yarhouse titled Sexual Identity Therapy:  Practice Guidelines for Sexual Identity Conflicts, Throckmorton writes that “the emergence of a gay identity for persons struggling with religious conflicts is a possibility envisioned by the recommendations.”

The professor also states his therapy “respects” that “some religious individuals will determine that their religious beliefs may become modified to allow integration of same-sex eroticism within their valued identity.”

In Brian McLaren’s latest book, A New Kind of Christianity, the reader is cordially invited to join the author in a heretical assault upon God and the Bible. Indeed, as McLaren enthusiastically demonstrates, it is not possible to attack one without attacking the other.

Acknowledging the work of fellow emergent travelers such as Phyllis Tickle, Tony Jones, and Doug Pagitt, McLaren tells us “something is trying to be born among those of us who follow Jesus Christ.” (pg.13) In fact, writes McLaren, “what is trying to be born today echoes the Great Reformation in many ways.” (pg.257)

But does McLaren’s paradigm vision really echo the Great Reformation? From the Reformation came the freedom of Sola Scriptura—the Word of God alone. The chains of a false religion were cast off. From the Reformation came men and women who were willing to die for the right to believe and proclaim Truth.

What does McLaren’s “reformation” offer? An errant eschatology. A New Age “christ.” The ascent of homospirituality into the temple. (2 Kings 23: 7) All made possible, of course, through creative misinterpretation of God’s Word. The author has brought us his Great Deformation, a theology that plays to the flesh even while being portrayed as a spiritual journey.

One of the major themes in A New Kind of Christianity, homosexuality, cleverly defines Christians who speak out against the homosexual lifestyle as suffering from “fundasexuality.” (Pg.174-5) However, you are only a “fundasexualist” if you speak out loudly against this sin.

McLaren decrees, “The term does not apply to the quiet, pious, respectful fundamentalism of straightforward, sincere people, but rather to the organizing, angry, dominating fundamentalism that declares war on those who differ.”

Highest rates found among blacks, women

About 16 percent of Americans between the ages of 14 and 49 are infected with genital herpes, making it one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases, U.S. health officials said on Tuesday.

Black women had the highest rate of infection at 48 percent and women were nearly twice likely as men to be infected, according to an analysis by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

About 21 percent of women were infected with genital herpes, compared to only 11.5 percent of men, while 39 percent of blacks were infected compared to about 12 percent for whites, the CDC said.

There is no cure for genital herpes, or herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2), which can cause recurrent and painful genital sores and also increases the likelihood of acquiring and transmitting the AIDS virus. It is related to herpes simplex virus 1, or oral herpes, which causes cold sores.

Several drugs are available to treat herpes symptoms and outbreaks, including acyclovir, which is available generically or under the Zovirax brand name, and valacyclovir, known generically as Valtrex — both made by GlaxoSmithKline PLC (GSK.L). Ganciclovir, sold as Zirgan, is made by privately-held Sirion Therapeutics, Inc.

The CDC estimates that more than 80 percent of people with genital herpes do not know they are infected.

“The message is herpes is quite common. The symptoms can be often very innocuous,” Dr. John Douglas of the CDC said in a teleconference.

“Because herpes is so prevalent it becomes … a really important reason to use condoms on a consistent and correct basis with all of your partners,” Douglas said.

Countries’ ministers vow to strengthen security ties, join forces against ‘Zionist threat’

Syrian Defense Minister Ali Muhammad Habib and his Iranian counterpart, Ahmad Vahidi, have signed a military cooperation agreement, Iranian media reported Friday. The two countries agreed to appoint a joint committee to oversee the agreement’s implementation.

The deal was signed towards the end of the Iranian minister’s visit to Syria. The two officials expressed their willingness to strengthen the military ties between the countries and noted that the cooperation would help expand the diplomatic, security and economic relations between Damascus and Tehran.

They vowed to join forces against the regional threat posed by “the Zionist regime”, referring to Israel.

Vahidi met Wednesday with Syrian President Bashar Assad and discussed the military cooperation between the two countries with him as well. During the visit, the minister was quoted as saying that Iran would strike back at Israeli weapons manufacturing sites and nuclear installations if the Jewish state attacks the Islamic republic’s nuclear facilities.

Van Rompuy Plans Shake-up of EU Summits

The new EU president, Herman Van Rompuy, is planning to shake up the regular gatherings of EU leaders to make them less formulaic so that they result in decisions that have immediate relevancy.

The summits, which take place at least four times a year in Brussels, will have their attendance streamlined and will produce conclusions which are “operative” and contain a message which is “readable and visible” for the European public.

Until now, summits have been numerically weighty affairs – involving over 50 people including foreign ministers, and often resulting in impenetrable conclusions the length of a short novel.

This is partly due to the fact that the post-meeting statements are carefully pre-written by ambassadors before being passed up the political food chain and partly as a result of the EU increasingly feeling obliged to take note or react to certain political situations beyond its borders as a matter of rote.

Speaking about future meetings of EU leaders, which he will start to chair from 2010, Mr Van Rompuy on Thursday evening (10 December) said: “We have to constitute a group, a club, that gets on, that works for the same cause, namely the European Union.”…more…

IDF Simulates Missile Attacks, War Against Syria and Hezbollah

The Israel Defense Forces carried out two extensive drills this week, simulating war and national emergency situation.

Both drills were two-day affairs for which dozens of reserve officers were mobilized and included scenarios in which ballistic missiles with conventional and nonconventional warheads landed in Israeli cities.

The first drill, by the Home Front Command, included the emergency rapid distribution of gas masks, in the event of an attack threat before the army completes the regular distribution, due to begin within a few months.

IDF officials emphasized that the exercise did not involve the deployment of forces in the field.

They said the main objective was to play out scenarios for the benefit of various think-tank units charged with anticipating operational dilemmas in the event of war or national emergency.

The second drill was held by the Paratroops Brigade in the north and simulated various combat scenarios against Syria and Hezbollah.

The exercise, which involved several reserve units, was the conclusion of an extended training program pursued by the brigade between assignments in the occupied territories and on the northern border.

One drill with live munitions took place on the Golan Heights and involved tank, artillery, sappers and Israel Air Force combat aircraft and helicopters…more…

Teachers Forced to ‘Hide in Closets’ to Pray

Florida school teachers say they are being forced to hide in closets to pray after a controversial court ruling.

Under an order crafted by the ACLU, school employees in Santa Rosa School District must act in an “official capacity” whenever they are at a “school event” – including breaks, after-school events on or off campus and private events held on campus.

Liberty Counsel, a nonprofit law firm, alongside Christian Educators Association International, is seeking to overturn the court order, which has resulted in three school officials being charged with contempt.

According to the group, school officials are strictly prohibited from showing agreement with anyone “communicating with a deity,” such as “bowing the head” or “folding hands.” “School officials” must also prohibit “third-parties” from praying, Liberty Counsel said.

During testimony that ended last week, Christian employees said the order has literally driven them to hide in closets to pray to avoid contempt charges…more…

Oil prices rose and hearts sank across the region this week as Iran began its biggest air defense drill ever and Israel readied a new missile defense system in preparation for a possible three-front war.

Since President Obama was swept into office promising a change toward strong diplomacy to resolve Middle East problems, his policies have faltered and his options narrowed.

The Bipartisan Policy Center, a Washington-based think tank that favors a hard line on Iran, issued a report last week recommending that the Obama administration begin preparing for possible military strikes on Iran next year. Iran Begins 4th Day of Military Drill

Iran’s largest military maneuver has commenced for the fourth day with the country’s defense forces combating supposed enemy attacks on nuclear installations within Iran.

Iran on Sunday launched a five-day drill that will cover some 600,000 square kilometers, spreading across the central, western and southern parts of the country.

During the third stage of the maneuver, that will continue for two days, Iranian servicemen will thwart hypothetical aerial threats against Iran’s nuclear facilities.

“Throughout the maneuver the hypothetical enemy… sought to dispatch its stealth bombers and fighter jets to the country’s sensitive areas,” spokesman for the maneuver, Brigadier General Ali Moqiseh said on Wednesday.

“Our defense brigades managed to thwart the attack by using defense in depth strategies, thus preventing the aggressor through successive layers of defense from reaching the areas.”

The exercise, covering more than a third of Iran’s territory, is meant to mobilize rapid-reaction army and air defense units and test anti-aircraft and radar capabilities in various parts of the country…more…

Typhoon Nida is in a favorable environment that has enabled it to intensify faster and stronger than previously forecast, and has now exploded into a Super typhoon. NASA’s Aqua satellite passed over Nida and captured a visible image of the storm revealing a clear eye, which indicates a strong typhoon.

The Moderate Imaging Spectroradiometer or MODIS instrument that flies aboard NASA’s Aqua satellite captured a visible image of Super Typhoon Nida on November 25 at 0355 UTC (November 24 at 10:55 p.m. ET). The image clearly revealed an eye that showed the surface of the northwestern Pacific Ocean! The MODIS image showed a tightly circulating symmetrical hurricane form.

At 10 a.m. ET on November 25, Super Typhoon Nida had maximum sustained winds near 172 mph (150 knots) with gusts as high as 207 mph! A category five typhoon on the Saffir-Simpson scale has sustained winds greater than 155 mph. Typhoon-force winds extend as far as 45 miles from Nida’s center, while tropical storm-force winds extend out as far as 105 miles from Nida’s center…more…

Israel ‘to Halt Settlement Growth’

Israel’s prime minister has announced a 10-month suspension to the construction of new settlement houses in the occupied West Bank.

Binyamin Netanyahu told a news conference on Wednesday that he declared the limited halt “out of broad national interests with the aim of encouraging negotiations with our Palestinian neighbours”.

“When the period of freeze ends my government will return to the previous policy of building in Judea and Samaria,” Netanyahu said, using the Jewish names for the occupied West Bank.

‘No God No Problem!’ Holiday Ads to Hit US Cities

Washington, D.C., residents can expect to see ads proclaiming, “No God?…No Problem!” inside buses, rail cars and on the side or tail of buses by week’s end. The campaign, sponsored by the American Humanist Association, will then target the transit systems of New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and San Francisco.

According to AHA, the holiday ad campaign is the first by a humanist group to go nationwide.

“We’re hoping this campaign will build awareness about the humanist movement and our ethical life philosophy – particularly among the ‘nones:’ the rapidly growing percentage of people who claim no religion,” said Roy Speckhardt, executive director of AHA.

Speckhardt went on to contend that religion does not have a monopoly on morality and that people can be good without a belief in God.

“We want to change the way people think and talk about nontheists, and to pave the way for acceptance of humanism as a valid and positive philosophy of life,” he said…more…
